Testing and estimating. -An apparatus for determining the composition of zinc-copper alloys consists of a vessel for the reception of the finely-divided alloy which is adapted to be heated and evacuated, the copper being weighed after the zinc has been volatized. Means are provided for condensing the zinc. The metal, carried in a refractory glass or other container g, is introduced into a vessel c of refractory material and having a reduced portion b which is surrounded by an electric or other heater a. The vessel c is connected by a metal sleeve d, constructed to act as a cooling jacket, t'o a pipe e by which the vessel c is evacuated. Condensation of the zinc occurs mostly around the sleeve d and, if it be desired to recover the zinc quantitatively, a plug of asbestos &c. is introduced at the point h.
