Abstract

267,911. Ballard, E. S. March 19, 1926, [Convention date]. Printing-surfaces.-To avoid the necessity of grinding or dissolving away the outer surface of an engraved printing plane or roller in order to remove the design, the actual printing-surface is formed as a thin film of metal electrically deposited upon a base plate or roller in such a manner that it can be stripped off when desired. The roller or base 10, preferably of copper or brass, is provided over the greater portion of its area with a layer 11 of a material on which a film 12 of copper or other suitable metal can be electrically deposited but from which the film can be readily stripped. Beyond the layer 11, the film integrally unites with the base 10 to form a seal which is removed by grinding &c. when it is desired to strip the film. The layer 11 may be an alloy of melting point about 202‹ F. containing bismuth, lead, tin, and cadmium, for example equal parts each of bismuth, lead, and' tin, or a film of grease oil, or graphite may be employed, or an oxidizing agent may be applied to the base 10.
