Abstract
407,834. Stereotype. BENNETT, C. W., 243, Alameda Avenue, Douglaston, Long Island, New York, U.S.A. April 25, 1933, No. 12082. Drawings to Specification. [Class 100 (ii).] A relief printing-surface is prepared by chilling to solidification selected portions, e.g. the characters of a cast plate, and raising these portions to obtain an increased relief. The matrix is preferably a metal plate which is provided with a bichromated gelatine surface to which the image is applied photographically. The plate is then coated with a varnish, and is dusted over with a powdered material capable of evolving gas when heated, such as powdered glass (obtained from a Cottrell precipitator in the stack of a furnace burning powdered coal), sand, metallic oxides such as iron oxide, or metal salts, such as copper arsenate, cadmium oxalate, or calcium carbonate. The plate is then developed by washing with water, the powdered material enabling the water to penetrate the varnish and remove the gelatine and superposed varnish at the unexposed portions. The plate may then be covered with a film of flexible material, preferably by applying a solution of rubber in petroleum naphtha or benzol. When a plate is cast, the molten metal coming into contact with the metal of the matrix, which is preferably cooled, is chilled to solidification, but the metal in contact with the heat-insulating coating remains liquid and is forced away from the coating by the gas evolved. To obtain a greater relief, the plate may first be heated while the casting-metal is in contact therewith and subsequently chilled. In an alternative process the matrix forms the upper side of the mould, and after the casting-metal has been poured and the selected portions chilled, the plate is raised by suction or magnetic means, so that the chilled portions adhering to the plate will be raised and so increase the relief. A similar effect is obtained by withdrawing a certain amount of metal from the mould after selected portions have been chilled.
