Abstract

432,716. Printing-surfaces. ROBINSON, Ltd., E. S. & A., and FOWERAKER, T. S., 1, Redcliff Street, Bristol. Jan. 29, 1934, No. 3025. [Class 100 (ii)] To enable a relief or letterpress printing- surface to retain more ink, the surface is subdivided by etching, before being engraved in relief, into a large number of small intaglio cells or hollows of substantially even and uniform depth and size, which serve as ink cells, so that when the ink is transferred to the paper it spreads by capillary attraction, whereby the individual spots of ink become united into a continuous surface. The printing-plate may be of copper or zinc and the hollows are produced by any known etching process employing a photogravure screen, the depth of the etching being arranged according to the amount of ink to be transferred. The surface, so prepared, may be used as a mould for making lead or rubber stereos. According to the Provisional Specification, the etching may take place after the design has been formed, and the printing- plate may be of rubber.
