Abstract

435,998. Printing processes. CHAMBERLAIN, S. B., St. Luke's Printing Works, Old Street, London. March 28, 1934, No. 9739. [Class 100 (ii)] In a method of plate printing, the sheet of paper is passed between an inked intaglio printing-surface and an impression cylinder or platen carrying an electrotyped metallic plate which bears in relief the matter to be printed arranged to register with the intaglio matter, the relief plate having been produced by electrotype from the intaglio plate or its replica. The relief projections may be somewhat rounded off or of less height than the intaglio recesses, being so formed by rubbing wax into these recesses before making the electrotype or by grinding down uniformly the surface of an intaglio plate from which an electrotype relief plate is then formed. Alternatively, an impression may be made in deformable metal, a metallic or cellulosic layer being interposed of thickness equivalent to the paper to be printed, and the resultant impression may be used for making the final relief electrotype. The overlay may be used bare or covered with a sheet of rubber, paper, &c., and any indentation marks on the paper may be removed by calendering. The paper may be printed at a low pressure and in a dry or wet state. Specifications 23233/09 and 257,908, [both in Class 100 (ii)], are referred to.
