Pile or nap, raising.-A machine for raising the nap on laundered blankets or other articles and stated to be of general application to brushing machines, is provided with a positively-driven card or bristle covered floating roll suspended so that, when it is bearing against the work, it isbut slightly displaced from the vertical plane passing through the pivot axis. Means is provided for adjusting the roll in relation to the work and in maintaining the adjustment by devices controlled by the thickness of the material. The material 95 to be treated is fed over endless belts 50 between geared driven feed rolls 32, 34 and over an idler roll 60 where it is acted upon by the brushing-roll 14 which is mounted on swing- ing arms 18. The roll 14 is mounted off centre so that it tends to move towards the work by gravity, assisted, if desired, by a weighted lever. The lower ends of the arms 18 engage a vertically-movable wedge piece slidable on the face of a fixed wedge-shaped abutment. The movable wedge is urged upwardly by a spring and carries an adjustable rod 80 connected to a lever 76, the shorter arm of the lever bearing on a pin 77 resting on the bearing of the upper feed roll 34. When a thicker part of the material passes between the feed rolls, the upper roll is raised and the lever 76 is turned to depress the movable wedge piece and thereby to move the brushing- roll further from the work. The initial adjustment of the wedge piece determines the depth to which the pile is raised.
