This invention relates to flat work ir'oners and particularly to thatclass including 'an ironing hed and one or more padded rolls cooperating' with the bed.
Heretofore it has been customary in machines of this type to provide an iroi'iin bed having a plurality of curved4 ironing aces, forming troughs, which receive the peripheries of pad ed ironing rolls mounted, in
suitable bearings guided in the frame and forced toward the hed by a plurality 4of springs arran be raised and` owered to bring the rolls llltQ and out of engagement with the bed. These'- machines heretofore have been used for at-.
tending upwardly.
work of substantially one thickness and have i not been used with any degreel of success: in ironing articles having buttons and of:` -unevenv thicknesses for the reason that the 20. pressure due to the weight of the rolls is sov great that the buttons are broken and good work is not produced, especially in machines utilized in commercial laundries.
The present invention aims to overcome the disadvantages accompanying the use of these machines for general ironing purposes by providin means for suspending each ironing roll 1n a manner to cause, it to float, so that each ironing roll will bear on thev U bedwith the necessary degree of pressure to properly iron articles of varying thicknesses and leave the buttons unharmed. The invenf tion'is also designed to revent unduefpackl in or hardening of le padding on the ro ls by reason of the fact that the rolls do not bear with unlimited pressure upon the ironing faces of the bed.
Other 'features of the invention will be brought out more clearly inthe following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Fig.l 1 is a side elevation of the machine' with parts broken away; Fig. 2 is a section upon the line 2 2, Fig. 1*; Fi .-3 is an enlarged View partly in and Fig. 4 is a sectional view upon the line 4 4, Fig. v3, some parts appearing in elevation.
Inthe arrangement shown inthe drawings, the frame comprises side members 1,
'i each provided near its upper edge with roll bearing guides 2 as shown in Fig. 1. These fra-me members are securedtogether byany suitable'means and by vthe hollow ironing ed in a member adapted to.
aeach spring sure block 14 adaptedto .the end of a pressure lscrew- 15 extendin and the'upper en Asection an partly in elevation of Fig.' 2;v
said bed when no ironing produced by the upper springs 13.
`Each roll bearing yis provided downwardly extending spring pilg ladapted to engage in the lower roll su po ing spring 18. Inithe caseof each ro pressure spring 18 nests in a socket 19y yoke ineach si e ofthe socket 19 is pro with a air of ears 21 each receiving p 22 assin through an eye .23v of a loiilergV spring ad]usting bolt 24. As above indig-j cated there are `two of .the adjustin bolts; thereof are threa ed andy pass through lugs 25 forming a part-Iota;v racket or support 26. secured to a stationary machine part, such as the ironing bed, by means of bolts 27. Each of the bolts 24 is provided .with a nutl 24 v to provide adjust- 10 0 ment of v.the lower springs, so that said springs ma be so positioned relative tothe ironing be bythe supporting yokes 2() that the ironing rolls 7 will just lcontact with ressure is being The pressure bars 12, one' on each side of the machine, are given their upward and downward movement by'links 28."an d 29, each of which is provided with an eccentric is of a welljknown construction'. f Y 5 In adjusting -the machine the' pressure is strap 30 engaging eccentrics 31 arranged' on transverse shafts 32. Each of these shafts is provided with a worm gear meshing with worms'34 adapted to be driven by gear 35 which meshes with .a ranged on a hand wheel shaft 3g.. When the hand Wheel is rotated tliepressure bars are raised and lowered to bring the rolls 7 into .and out of engagement with theironing bed.
This pressuremechanisni for the bars relieved from the upper springs 13 and the lower springs a-re adjusted or positioned to carry the weight .of the rolls. The upper springs are then-adjusted tothe proper tension to prod-ucothe desired ironing effect between the rolls, and the bed without creating suiiicient pressure "to break buttons on articles passing through the machine. v
From the'foregoing it will be seen that the rolls float, as it were, in the machine and exert the. proper eect Without any'undue pressure upon the work, thereby preventing the breaking of buttons-and the undue hard;`
ening or packing of the padding on the rolls.
Having described m invention, I claim:
