Spindle - driving apparatus; spindle apparatus. - A variable-speed electric motor for driving high - speed centri fuges for spinning artificial silk, and spinning spindles, has a vertical shaft A resting on a single support A<1> and a bell member C for providing automatic balance while running. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the rotor D of the motor is carried on the outside of the balancing bell and the plane of the centre of the motor passes through the footstep bearing A<1>. The rotor may be arranged on the inner surface of the bell to co-operate with an internal stator. In Fig. 3, the electrical elements D, E are arranged as in an ordinary electric motor, the plane of their centres in this case being situated above the footstep bearing. A guide O may be provided in the upper part of the support B to counteract lateral thrust.
