Chemical furnaces; charges, agitating.-In the production of sodium sulphide the reduction of sodium sulphate by heating with carbon is effected in a furnace having a flab rotatable hearth which is rendered air-tight. This may be done by providing the hearth at its outer edge with a V-shaped collar into which dips a sheetmetal partition reaching from the roof. Sand or similar material placed on the collar seals the furnace. The mass is stirred continuously by one or more reciprocating ploughs which may be water cooled. The furnace may be mechanically charged and discharged continuously.
