Windows and the like, cleaning.-In mechanism for cleaning wind-screens, comprising two wipers connected to wiper shafts, one of which is driven by a motor and the other is driven from the first shaft by a detachable connection, a separate housing detachably secured to the wind-screen pawl is provided for the driving gearing on each shaft. As shown, the shaft 15 actuated a motor 10, is provided with a segmental pinion 14 engaging a rack rod 23 which also engages a pinion 25 on the shaft 15<1>. The pinion 14 is housed within the motor casing. The pinion 25 is heated in a housing 26 provided with a shank 27 which forms a bearing for the shaft 15<1>. The motor may be connected to the shaft 15 through the medium of a slipping clutch, as shown in Fig. 5. A gear wheel 31 loosely mounted on the shaft 15 is provided with a recess 32 adapted to receive part of a pin 33 fixed to the shaft. The wheel is pressed against the pin by a spring 34. If the wiper meets with an obstruction, the pin 33 moves out of the recess and the motor continues to drive the wheel 31 while the wiper is stationary. The clutch connection also facilitates movement of the wiper out of the line of vision of the driver of the vehicle.
