Abstract

675,432. Windscreen cleaners. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. June 27, 1950 [June 27, 1949], No. 16071/50. Class 138 (i). Mounting of the driving mechanism of a vehicle windscreen wiper in which the wiper arm extends upwardly from its oscillating shaft, distinguished by a bearing aperture and an entry opening formed in an end wall of the vehicle beneath the windscreen and by the mechanism being adapted for insertion as a unit, through the entry opening and inwardly of the vehicle and for the penetration of the bearing aperture by the said shaft and its bearing, upon a small movement of the mechanism outwardly of the vehicle. As shown in Fig. 2, the windscreen wiper mechanism comprises a driven shaft 23 supported in a bearing sleeve 24 supported in a cover plate 26 and a wiper shaft 8 supported in a bearing sleeve 10, the shaft bearing sleeves being carried by a bent bracket arm 30. The shaft 23 drives a 'gear segment 35 which engages with a gear segment 34 on the shaft 8. The mechanism is assembled on the vehicle by lifting the bonnet 44 and inserting the mechanism rearwardly of the vehicle through an opening 28 in a wall 16, 13 of the body and then moving the mechanism forwardly of the vehicle a small amount so that the bearing sleeve 10 protrudes through an aperture 43 in the wall portion 13. The sleeve 10 is then secured in position by a nut 12 threaded thereon abutting a distance piece 11. The cover plate 26 is then secured to the wall portion 16 by screws 27. In the embodiment shown two wipers are provided and are drivable by an electric motor 15, mounted centrally of the vehicle on a frame structure 18, through a crank 20 and links 21 connecting with cranks 22 on the two drive shafts 23. The driving linkage between the motor and shafts 23 is connected after assembling the cover plates 26 in position. If necessary and if space conditions permit the driving motor for the wipers may also be arranged behind the end wall of the vehicle body. Also each wiper may be driven by a separate motor. The gear segments may be replaced by bevel friction wheels as described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown) or the driv-' ing connection between the shafts 23 and 8 may be effected by a spring connector as described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown).
