Abstract

263,200. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Dec. 18, 1925, [Convention date]. Addition to 242,620. Benzanthrone dyes.-The process of the parent Specification, according to which vat-dyes are obtained by treating with alkaline condensing agents benzanthrone-Bz1-thioethers, is modified by replacing the latter by oxidation products of Bz1-benzanthrone-thioethers which have a free 2- position and a sulphoxide or sulphone character; dyestuff formation thereby occurs with greater facility. According to examples :-(1) Bz1- benzanthronylmethylsulphide is oxidized with ammonium persulphate in sulphuric acid solution and the products converted into a violet vat-dyestuff by treatment with caustic potash and alcohol on the water bath; (2) Bz1-Bz1<1>dibenzanthronylsulphide is oxidized in sulphuric acid with hydrogen peroxide and the product converted into isodibenzanthrone by treatment with caustic potash and alcohol at 90-100‹ C. ; (3) benzanthronylsulphide is treated with nitric and sulphuric acids; the dinitrobenzanthronylsulphone so obtained yields the diamino compound by reduction with sodium sulphide; the latter yields with alcoholic potash at 130-140‹ C. a dyestuff which dves cotton from the vat in violet-blue shades changed to marine-blue by chlorination.
