292,896. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 18, 1927. Divided on 292,658, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for]. Samples furnished. Anthraquinone dyes.-Dyestuffs of the anthraquinone series, presumably 1 : 1<1>-dioxy-2 : 2<1>-dianthraquinonyls, are obtained by fusing 1-oxyanthraquinone or a derivative thereof with caustio alkalies in the presence of an organic solvent or suspension medium, advantageously with exclusion of oxygen. The products may be purified by fractional precipitation from sulphuric acid or by treatment with oxidizing agents as described in Specification 292,897 and may be employed for dyeing in a faintly alkaline vat as described in Specification 292,658, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for]. In examples, (1) 1-oxyanthraquinone is fused with caustic alkali and alcohol or aniline, access of air being prevented as far as possible; the product is run into water and the dyestuff precipitated by passing air through the solution; it dyes wool in pure yellow shades from the vat; (2) 1-oxy-4-aminoanthraquinone is fused with alcoholic potash in a current of nitrogen, the melt run into water and the dyestuff separated by blowing in air; it dyes wool in grey shades from an ammonia-hydrosulphite vat, and (3) 1-oxy-4-methoxyanthraquinone is similarly treated; the product dyes wool brown from a faintly alkalline hydrosulphite vat.
