18,239. Johnson, J. Y., [Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik]. Aug. 11. Sulphuretted dyes are obtained by heating a nitrophenanthraquinone, or a halogen derivative thereof, with an alkali polysulphide, or alkali sulphide and sulphur, in presence or not of a diluent. Examples are given of the production of dyes from 2:7-dinitrophenanthraquinone, 4:5-dinitrophenanthraquinone, and dinitrodibromphenanthraquinone; crude nitrophenanthraquinones are also specified as parent materials. The products dye cotton yellow to brown shades from alkali sulphide baths, or hydrosulphite vats. The Provisional Specification refers to the treatment of derivatives in general of nitrophenanthraquinones. Halogennitrophenanthraquinones are obtained by nitrating halogenphenanthraquinones; the dinitrodibromphenanthraquinone specified above is obtained thus by nitrating in sulphuric acid the dibromphenanthraquinone of melting- point 284‹C.
