Optical apparatus for recording sound photographically or for reproducing sound photo-electrically from a record, instead of the usual slit interposed between a source of light and the film, there are provided three straightedged opaque bodies so arranged in different parallel planes as to permit of the passage of a very thin band of light between their adjacent edges. Fig. 1 shows the use in a recording-apparatus of such a device comprising two fixed members 7, 8 and an opposed member 9 which is adjustable by a screw 10. By this means an extremely thin band of light passes between the edges of the parts 7 - - 9 from the sound-influenced source of light 1 to the film 11. A soundreproducing apparatus to which the invention is applied is shown in Fig. 4, and comprises a lightsource 21 and a photo-electric cell 25, a system of plates 7 - - 9, as above described, being arranged between the source and the cell. The light passes to the cell 25 through a chamber 22 containing a diffusing lens 23. The travelling film record may be arranged in any of the positions indicated by the lines 11 - - 11<3>.
