Abstract

262,914. Rawling, A. Nov. 25, 1925. Balancing moving parts by weights. - The primary and secondary forces in reciprocating engines are balanced by reciprocating or oscillating masses moved by cams on the main shaft. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the reciprocated weight is in the form of a cylinder e carrying spindles upon which are mounted rollers c which engage cams a on the shaft b. The cylinder has guide rods g which engage bores in the shaft bearing. Fluid pressure may be supplied to the interior of the cylinder through a non-return valve l. A relief valve o is provided. Springs instead of fluid-pressure may keep the roller up to the cam. The part reciprocating may comprise a piston working in a cylinder. The rollers may be carried by levers interposed between the weight and cams, the lever engaging the weight through a rolling contact. A construction is described wherein four cams on the shaft oscillate a pair of weighted levers, each lever carrying a pair of arms with rollers engaging two of the cams. The movement in either direction is effected in part by one pair of cams and in part by the other part.
