Abstract

262,154. Gminder, E. Nov. 30, 1925, [Convention date]. Yarns, mercerizing.-In process for improving vegetable fibrous material by swelling under the action of alkalies or acids, particularly applicable to hanks or to fabrics for obtaining an improved mercerizing effect., the material is cooled in the stretching zone by passing over well cooled surfaces, thus neutralizing the decomposing effect of the heat of the chemical reaction and of the stretching. The stretching rollers may be cooled, and where stretching chains are used, as for fabrics, the material may be drawn over or around cooled tables. After the stretching has been effected, the material may be washed with hot solutions while in a stretched condition.
