Abstract

Mercerized or non-mercerized cotton fabrics whether plain or provided with patterns or embroideries are given a transparent, translucent, or wool-like effect, and cotton fabrics made of coarser yarns are given a linen-like lustrous appearance by moistening the fabric with water until it has a moisture content of at least 30 per cent and then treating it with sulphuric acid or with sulphuric acid and an alkali lye. Crape effects, which may be enhanced by dyeing, are produced by printing stripes or patterns in water on the dry fabric before the application of sulphuric acid at 50.6 DEG B<\>ae. and a temperature of - 10 DEG C. The printed parts have a greater affinity for dyestuffs. Examples are given of processes for producing wool-like effects in which the sulphuric is of a strength of 50.3 DEG B<\>ae. at 5 DEG C. and 50 DEG B<\>ae. at 0 DEG C., the duration of the treatment being one minute, and in which the fabric is given a softness and a transparent effect by treatment with sulphuric acid of 50 DEG to 50.3 DEG B<\>ae. at 0 DEG C. for 1 to 2 minutes and subsequent mercerization under tension with cold lye. Hydrochloric, nitric, phosphoric, or a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acids may be used in place of sulphuric acid, and reserves may be used for the production of pattern effects.
