Charges, conveying; discharging. - In the heat treatment or distillation of carbonaceous and other materials and in the manufacture of briquettes the material is forced by a plurality of coacting screws into a casing which is subdivided into cells or compartments by webs or plates so that briquettes are formed whose shape in cross-section corresponds to that of the cells. A pair of non-contacting feeding screws 2<a>, 2<a> in a casing 2 force the charge through cells 4a formed by webs in the retort or casing 1. The fuel is compressed into briquettes which are discharged into a box 6 through a pair of hinged flaps 7 having counterweights 7<b>, the flaps opening automatically under pressure greater than that exerted by the counterweights.
