Gramophone pick-ups; magnetic instruments. -A device for reproducing sound electrically, which can be attached to the tone-arm of a gramophone in place of the usual sound-box, comprises an electromagnetic current generator having an armature pivotally mounted within coils located between magnet poles, the pivot being sheathed in sound-insulating material, and cushioning stops being provided to bear against each end of the armature. In the device shown, a pair of flat magnets 7, 8 are connected by soft iron pole-pieces 9, 10 shaped as shown in Fig. 4, each piece being bolted between like poles of the magnets 7, 8. Similarly-wound coils 14, 15, connected in series, are enclosed within the magnets and pole-pieces, the ends of the coils leading to an insulating block 4 from which leads may be taken to an amplifier for operating a loud-speaker. An armature 11 of Norway iron is mounted as shown on a steel pivot 12 encased in a soft rubber tube 13, one end of the armature having a socket for a reproducing needle 18, which is gripped, to stiffen it, by a cap 19 screwed on to the armature. Plugs 20 of soft rubber are fitted into recesses at the ends of the pole-pieces, and are forced by screws 21 into engagement with both sides of each end of the armature, thus forming damping cushions, A handle 24 is pro. vided at one side of the reproducer, which is at. tachable to a tone-arm 2 by means of a friction collar 1.
