Abstract

Gramophone pick-ups; magnetic instruments.- Apparatus having a coil in the flux path of a magnet is provided with an armature having a rigid shaft mounted in resilient bearings and arranged so that its rocking axis is at the centre of mass of the armature and shaft. As applied for reproducing sound from records, the armature 11, Figs. 3 and 4, extends through a coil 12 arranged between the U-shaped poles 10 of a magnet 7 secured by screws 8 to a back plate 5 and enclosed by a cover plate 6. The shaft 17 of the armature is of square section, and is covered with rubber sleeves 18 and mounted between opposing V-shaped recesses in the pole-pieces, or is engaged by a V-recess in a spring to provide the necessary resiliency and damping. Further damping may be secured by rubber blocks 21 arranged in grooves in the pole-pieces adjacent the upper end of the armature. The coil wires are connected to terminals on an insulating block 14 from which leads pass through the tubular extension of the back plate to amplifying devices and a loudspeaker.
