Magnetic instruments; phonographic recorders and reproducers. - In a gramophone pick-up or recorder of the kind having a perma.- nent or electromagnet and a coil or coils linked with a magnetic flux, the needle or stylus being of ferromagnetic material and producing, by its vibrations, variations in the magnetic flux path, the needle 7 forms an extension of one pole 13 of the magnet 1. The other pole of the magnet has a soft iron pole piece 2 divided into two converging branches 3, 4 on which are arranged coils 5, 6 connected in series. The needle is adapted to vibrate in the gap between the branches 3, 4. This vibration does not involve any substantial variation in the total flux through the magnet and needle, which are of high reluctance, but it varies the distribution of the flux through the low reluctance branches 3, 4, thereby inducing current changes in the coils 5, 6. A light stylus holder 8 of ferromagnetic material is pivoted to the pole 13 of the magnet through ferromagnetic brackets 10, 11, with the interposition of rubber strips 12 for damping purposes.
