Nuts.-In automatic machines for making nuts from bar stock in which the shearing off and pressing tool has to make two operations, one cooperating with a chamfering die and the other with a finishing die both on the change slide, during the time the holing punch is making one operation, the shearing off and pressing tool is arranged on a slide separate from and driven independently of the slide carrying the holing punch; the notching-punch may be carried in the same slide as the holing-punch or in a third slide. The holing-punch 6 and notching-punch 7 are on a slide 3, and the shearing off and pressing tool 5 and finishing punch 4 are on another slide 2. The notching-die 12, holing-die 13 and cutting- off bar 14 are on a bridge 11 between the slide 3 and the change slide 8 which carries the chamfering die 9 and burr removing die 10. After the nut 16 is severed from the bar stock 15 by the tool 5 it is pressed by the same tool against the die 9 to form the chamfered face, during which time it is held by the pin 17. The slide 2 then rises slightly and the slide 8 moves to the right bringing the die 10 under the punch 5, which again descends and forces the nut into the hole 18 of the die 10. When the slide 8 moves to the left the punch 4 again descends and forces the nut through the opening 18 in the die 10, thereby removing the burr, the finished nub then dropping through the hole 19 and guide 20. The slide 3 may be carried within the slide 2, but actuated independently thereof.
