[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Punching washers ; rolling screw-threads ; jointing by rolling.-A machine for, making washers is combined with means for supplying screw blanks from a loose assemblage so that assembled blanks and washers are fed to a thread rolling machine whereby the screws are finished and the washers rendered captive. The washer forming machine 2 is such that the washers remain attached to the strip stock 4 by narrow sections. Screw blanks are fed from the container 60 to inclined rails 50 and are arrested at the assembly station by lugs 94 on the jaws 88 of levers 72 pivoted at 74 and biassed to closed position by a connecting spring 96. At this station the rails 50 are interrupted by a gap that houses curved guides 68 extending from a die 58. The strip 4 passes between the die 58 and the top of a guide 56 for a punch 60 having a recess 62 so that the washer punched out from the strip may be carried up between the guides 68 and threaded over the shank of the screw blank that is restrained from rising by a guard rail 110. On descent of the punch the pressure exerted by the blanks in the rails 50 forces the assembled blank and washer on to the lower rails 52 and the jaws 88 close to arrest the next blank. The rails 52 deliver to transfer mechanism 44 that feeds the thread rolling dies 48. The punch is operated by a cam 98 and lever 100 and the strip is fed by a pawl 18 actuated by a cam 34. In some cases the punch may perform the entire blanking operation.
