Spindle apparatus; doffing arrangements.-In flyer spinning, roving, and like machines having spindles which are carried by footstep bearings and provided with intermediate bearings offering lateral support, the upwardly projecting neck E of each flyer B, Fig. 1. is supported in a non-rotatable bush D fitted in an aperture C in a rail A. The rail A is carried on members F secured to vertical rods G, which are adapted to be lifted by cams L on shaft K to raise the bushes D clear of the necks E preparatory to doffing. The apertures C and bushes D may be slotted radially at C<1>, D<1>, Fig. 2, to pass the thread clear of the bushes and rail A when doffing. In a modification, each aperture C is rebated and each bush D stepped correspondingly, as shown in Fig. 4, and is held against rotation by a pin M and set screw N. When doffing, the rail A is raised by cams L, and the bushes D are retained on the necks of the flyers by a split ring O. In machines where the space between the tops of the flyers and the lowest drawing roll is insufficient to permit the rail A to be raised, cam or like mechanism is provided to lower the spindles when it is desired to doff.
