Pneumatic actuation.-A flexible rubber diaphragm 1 for actuating electric switches has a fold 3 near its periphery and has radial reinforcing cords embedded in the rubber adjacent to the fold. In manufacturing the diaphragm a cord is wound on a semi-annular former having evenly spaced notches in its periphery, and a semi-circular sheet of rubber composition is pressed on each face of the former so that the cord is pressed into composition. The cords are then severed at the inner and outer peripheries and the semicircular sheets stripped from the former. These sheets are joined to form a disc and a disc of rubber applied to the face in which the cords are embedded. The diaphragm disc so formed is placed in a twopart mould shaped to the final shape of the diaphragm and the diaphragm vulcanized.
