Abstract

555,976. Retreading tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and ADAMS, A. L. Jan. 30, 1942, Nos. 1276, 1277 and 1278. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] The new tread is in the form of previously vulcanized or partly vulcanized rubber blocks. The blocks may be separate from each other, in which case they may be positioned by a template 13 having holes 15, through which the blocks are passed, and flanges 14 which engage the shoulders of the tyre. Alternatively blocks 10 may be connected to each other by a thin tissue, in which case they may be applied as an annulus or as a length which is wrapped around the tyre. The blocks may be patterned, as with knife cuts or analogous slits. Separate blocks may be aligned on an old tyre to match an existing remnant of a pattern. The blocks are pressed on to the old tread, which has been treated with rubber solution by means of (a) a plain outer mould ring, which may be flat or contoured and may have flanges to confine the blocks, (b) a constricting bandage, or (c) a steam pressure chamber. The spaces between the blocks may be left empty or filled with soapstone. Pressure may be exerted from within the tyre, as by means of the usual inner tube. The retreading may proceed sector by sector, in which case a localized inflatable member or a mechanically pressed pad may be used to apply the pressure. The heating may be by steam, electricity or gas, e.g. gas jets in the sector-by-sector method. The plain mould ring 16 may be heated by electric induction or may form an electric resistance or, as shown, may be heated by an electrical heating coil 17 wound around it. Specification 555,070 is referred to. According to the second Provisional Specification the blocks may be joined together by a sheet of rubber, which may be removed after the blocks have been secured to the tyre. According to the third Provisional Specification the blocks may be joined together by a web, the bonding pressure being distributed from the blocks through the web over the tyre.
