Abstract

555,690. Retreading tyres. WRIGHT, S. A. May 30, 1942, No. 7362. [Class 87 (ii)] A flat band of rubber 13, Fig. 3, is placed on the prepared tread portion of a worn tyre 12, and a patterned moulding plate 5 made of vulcanized rubber is pressed into the surface of the band 13, the air between the ridges 5A of the pattern escaping into the open air by way of metal tubes 10, which are embedded in the ridges, and one or more tubes 11 which extend to the face of the plate 5 and communicate with the open air. The tubes 10 may be replaced by cuts in the ridges. The pressure may be applied by interior and exterior inflatable rubber bags as described in Specification 555,680, the outer bag being confined by a circumferentially divided tyre cover as described in Specification 555,689. The heat is applied by an electric element 6 which may comprise resistance wire disposed between two rubber sheets. The moulding plate 5 may be vulcanized to the electric element assembly. The plate 5 may be made by pressing a rubber band 5B, Fig. 1, into the grooves of an old tyre 1 having a good tread or which has been cut to provide a suitable tread. The tread may be cut so that the walls of the grooves incline awav from each other. Air is allowed to escape from between the ridges of the tread by way of short metal tubes 2 extending through the ridges, and one or more tubes 4 communicating with the open air.
