Abstract

1520288 Bonding tread strips to tire bodies BANDAG Inc 22 Oct 1975 43425/75 Heading B7C In a method of bonding a procured tread strip 116 to a tire body by means of a vulcanizable bonding layer 118, fluid pressure is applied to a flexible cover 122 positioned over the tread strip, a stretchable liner 152 of perforated synthetic polymer film having lubricating properties being disposed between the cover and the tread strip. Use of the stretchable liner helps the cover to slide relative to the tread strip and to enter tread grooves 120 so as to enable transmission of pressure to the bottoms of the tread grooves. Air between the cover and the tread strip is vented through a vent, element 24. The fluid used in the method may be a mixture of steam and air. Alternatively, the fluid used may be air, and heat may be supplied by resistance heating elements. The method may be performed in tire manufacture or in tire retreading. The apparatus described in Specification 1,520,289 may be used when carrying out the method.
