Abstract
570,302. Vulcanizing tyres. UNION RUBBER WORKS, Ltd., and LLEWELLEN, J. A. W. Sept. 10, 1943, No. 14890. [Class 70] Tyres are retreaded or repaired by the use of a device which forms in conjunction with the tyre, a pressure chamber surrounding the new material to be vulcanized, but which is not in contact with this new material. In a simple form, the device consists of a ring with inwardly extending flanges, one of which may be detachable, which surrounds the tyre, bearing on the shoulders and enclosing the tread in a chamber into which steam or other heating medium is introduced. The device illustrated consists of a back plate 12 with rim 13 and lid 14 provided with sealing means such as an airbag 15. A tyre 4 on a carrier which may be a wheel, is mounted on a central spindle 19 and the lid 14 is closed by a screw 18 and handwheel 21, before or after the tyre is inflated, pressing the side walls between itself and the back plate 12, and forming a vulcanizing chamber 1a. The rim 13 may be of such a depth as to accommodate more than one tyre.
