Abstract
260,935. Oberrheinische Handelsges. Nov. 6, 1925, [Convention date]. Fibres, roughening mechanically; fibres, treating.-The spinning qualities of normally smooth fibres such as artificial silk and the like are increased and finer, softer, stronger, and more fluffy threads obtained without the use of excessive twist by treating the fibres with substantially granular, crystalline or amorphous roughening agents before carding and spinning. As suitable substances may be mentioned oxides or salts of metals of the alkaline earths, or other metals, or powdered, amorphous and earthy substances of various kinds, of inorganic or organic nature. such as tale, cement or the like, calcium sulphate or caustic lime. Solutions of crystallizable substances may be used to obtain a coating of fine crystals and the solutions thereof may be sprayed on or applied by immersion of the fibres therein. The substances used may be mixed with water and applied in suspension or they may be precipitated from a solution, as for example in mordanting, on to the fibres, or caused to adhere thereto by the use of a lubricating or fattening agent or agglutinant or adhesive such as soap, oleine dextrine or the like. The fibres may be treated with a suspension of organic colloids such as starch solutions, gelatine or the like and slowly dried. Waterproofing processes such as treatment with sulphate of alumina followed by animal or other glue, soap and the like may be used. Previously curled fibres may be treated and the roughening treatments above mentioned may be combined with stirring, centrifuging, pounding, pressing, fulling and a subsequent curling treatment in suitable wet or dry condition. The curling tendency is thus increased and the spinning qualities further improved.
