Abstract
260,743. Kadow, A. Oct. 7, 1925. Casting-machines; moulds.-For casting lead, copper, aluminium, zinc, iron, or other metals having low viscosity, moulds are provided with inlets so small that the metal will not flow ,through them by gravity. In casting a hollow article 40 the core 11 is hollow, connected to evacuating means, and provided with slits 16 to withdraw air but not metal from the mould cavity. The walls of the mould-halves 1 may also be slit, hollow, and connected, when in closed positions, by passages to the evacuated head 12. The parting faces 8 are also exhausted by passages 7. In a modification, for cup-shaped articles, the mould parts 20, 21, 23, Fig. 11, are screwed together and exhausted at 27, 28. The metal inlets comprise holes or slits 30 preferably <1>/16 to <1>/200 of an inch wide. For lead casting the metal should be heated to 600‹ F. and the mould to 200‹ F. If desired, passages 31, Fig. 11, for cooling fluid may be arranged in the bottom 29 of the mould between the slits. If a bottomless cylinder is to be cast the slits in the bottom of the mould are arc-shaped.
