Abstract

520,035. Casting-machines. ZUNCKEL, B. Oct. 11, 1938, No. 29387. [Class 83 (i)] Casting processes; moulds.-In continuous casting, the molten metal is poured into superposed divisible moulds 1, 2 and after the metal in the lower mould 2 has set the halves are separated, by turning arms 5, 6, Fig. 2, about the column 4, raised and assembled upon the upper mould 1. The operation is repeated with the moulds alternately while the casting 7 is lowered by the device 8. The moulds are provided with means 10, 11 for circulating cooling fluid and the casting is cooled by a device 12 or by lowering into water so as to extract heat from the molten metal axially and keep its volume small. In a modification, the moulds, instead of being counterbalanced at 9 are moved down guides 13, 14, Figs. 3 and 4, by motordriven gears 15, the lowest is removed by the halves being separated and moved away from the casting on rails 17, 18, raised by tables 19, 20 and reassembled upon the uppermost mould. The metal may be introduced by a spout 21 or through a slot 22 between the mould halves, which aligns with a hole 33 in the guide 14, by a pourer 23. Ducts 24 for cooling fluid are provided. The moulds may be varied according to the cross-section desired and a core is inserted if a hollow article is required. The guides may be formed to vary the gap between the mould halves corresponding to shrinkage or expansion of the casting and keep them pressed on the latter for better heat transfer.
