W., 20, Grange Avenue, Hale, Cheshire, ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd., Vickers Works, Sheffield, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Dec. 23, 1932, No. 36425. [Class 83 (i).] Casting processes ; moulds. -In the method of casting wherein a substance of low melting point, such as a liquid metal or alloy or a mixture of metal salts, is introduced into the space which arises between the casting and the mould on solidification, a screen or barrier projecting from the interior surface of the mould is employed to restrict the substance to certain parts of the casting. A mould 1, Fig. 1, has an inlet 6 with a refractory lining 7 for bottom-pouring of the casting metal, the inner end of the inlet extending into a central portion 5 which is detachable from the base 2. A ring 11 fits into a recess 10 between the members 2, 5, and projects into the mould. After casting the metal 4, the lower part of the ring 11 prevents lead which is introduced through an inlet 9 to fill the space 4<a> from reaching the inlet 6. The ring is taken out with the cast ingot, and the/part projecting from the casting is removed. A mould for casting rolls comprises a chill 12, Fig. 2, for the body portion, and boxes 13, 15 with refractory material for the end portions. Lead is introduced under pressure from a container 22 through an inlet 20 formed in a ring 27 separated by gaskets 29 from the upper and lower mould sections. A ring 28 acts as a screen to prevent lead reaching the lower portion of the mould, and may be tinned to facilitate bonding of the inner part with the casting. The ring 27 may be formed with thin walls and have a refractory coating to prevent chilling of the lower portion of the roll. According to the Provisional Specification the barrier or screen may be perforated to facilitate bonding with the cast metal.
