Abstract

260,620. Soc. Italiana Pirelli, (Assignees of Mrach, A.). Oct. 31, 1925, [Convention date]. Drawings to Specification. Devulcanizing and using waste rubber.- Vulcanized rubber is regenerated by adding to it a solution of caustic alkalis or potassium and sodium carbonates of moderate concentration (35‹-36‹ BÚ) in quantities slightly in excess of that chemically corresponding to the total sulphur in the rubber, and raising the temperature to that required, under atmospheric pressure, while agitating the mass. In an example, 220 lbs. of rubber scrap is ground and placed in a rotatable drum capable of being heated and cooled externally, with 66 lbs. of caustic soda at 35‹ BÚ. The drum is rotated and heated rapidly to 135‹ C. and then slowly to 210‹ C., the whole process taking seven hours. Fabric may be destroyed by a preliminary acid treatment. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that other salts capable of combining with sulphur may be used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
