Cigarette-making machines. - Carded tobacco is fed to the pan of a scale or the like, which is set to tip at a predetermined weight, the contents of the pan being deposited upon an apron which is advanced at a uniform speed towards the hopper of the rod-forming mechanism. The hopper 19 is fitted with a carding roll 11, pin roll 12, feeding roll 15, agitating roll 17 and moving-belt 23, rotating in the directions indicated in Fig. 1, the belt 23 constituting the bottom of the hopper. The issuing stream is measured off by means of a beam scale having an adjustable weight 33 and pan 32 consisting of compartments 32<a>, 32b, 32<c>. Triangular portions of the studs 34 carrying the pan enter recesses in the beam 36. A member 38, having pawls equal in number to the compartments of the pan, is secured to one of the studs and is tripped by projections on a member 39. This is driven through toothed and bevel gearing from shaft 49 of the roll 50 over which moves the belt 46. When the pan is being tripped, the delivery from the stream 30 to the pan is discontinued by the withdrawal of the pin roll 12. For this purpose contacts 70, 78 are positioned on the beam 36 and support 79, and form part of an electric circuit containing a battery 72 and solenoid 75. Closing of the contacts due to the tipping of the pan therefore results in the withdrawal from engagement with the tobacco stream of the arm 81, which is secured to the armature of the solenoid and carries the pin roll 12 and paddle wheel 31. The successive charges of tobacco are deposited obliquely on the belt 46, and at the delivery end of the latter, portions of consecutive lots are jointly delivered to the hopper 62, the material being redistributed uniformly by rolls 65, 67. 3
