Abstract
259,610. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Woodson, J. C.). Oct. 10, 1925, [Convention date]. Wire resistance, embedded and encased.-In a heating unit comprising a wire enclosed in a tubular casing filled with an insulating powder, such as magnesia or alundum, a layer of a substance which expands on oxidation, such as magnesium, is interposed between the casing and the powder and oxidized so as to compact the powder and secure good conduction of heat. In the form - shown, the magnesium tube 19 is formed with longitudinal slots outside and inside. The inner slots are filled with an oxidizing material 18, such as red lead, and steam is passed through the outer slots 20. The oxidizing material may be omitted and the magnesium oxidized by steam alone. The layer of magnesium may also be formed by a coiled ribbon.
