Abstract

259,532. O'Toole, E. Oct. 10, 1925, [Convention date]. Coal-cutting machines.-Mining and loading machines for use on a long wall have the elongated frame thereof provided with a longitudinal track on which travels a carriage provided with a vertically movable platform carrying auxiliary kerf cutting mechanism. As shown, a mining and loading machine as described in Specification 244,392 is provided longitudinally thereof with tracks on which runs a carriage B mounted on rollers 65, one of which is integral with a pinion 66 engaging a rack 3<a>. The carriage supports through screws 69 a platform 71 carrying an overcutting machine 72, the platform and machine 72 being vertically movable by operating a chain 93 which drives sprocket nuts 68 engaging the screws 69; an adjustable sprocket 94 is provided for tightening the chain 93. The machine 72 comprises a motor, one end of which drives a cutter chain 81, Fig. 4. through gearing 75, 76, 78, 79, 82, while the other end drives a vertical shaft 89 through worm gearing 88; the shaft 89 may act through a friction clutch 91 to drive the chain 93, and through a clutch 95 and gearing 97, 98 to drive the pinion 66 and thereby move the carriage B.
