Abstract
259,498. Mond, A. L., (I.G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 13, 1926. Magnesium chloride. - In the production of anhydrous magnesium chloride by the action of chlorine on mixtures of oxidic magnesium compounds and a reducing agent at a temperature below the melting point of the magnesium chloride, e.g. at 500-550‹ C., substances are added to the mixed magnesium oxide &c. and reducing agent which render the mixture highly porous when heated, and thereby accelerate the production of magnesium chloride. For instance, magnesium oxychloride may be added to the reaction mixture, or the magnesium oxide &c. in the mixture mav be transformed into an oxychloride by the addition of fused hydrated magnesium chloride or of magnesium chloride lyes. The mass then obtained is self-binding, is not fused at the temperature of the reaction, and acquires the required porosity on heating by loss of water. Additionally, the carbon &c. used may be wholly or partly replaced by sawdust, peat, lignite dust, &c. and the mixture be dried, e.g. at 350‹ C., before chlorination. By increasing the amount of sawdust &c. in the latter mixture, the amount of magnesium chloride added to a given quantity of magnesium oxide may be reduced. Examples of the amounts of the various ingredients used in the above mixtures, and of the after treatment of the latter, are given.
