Abstract
258,593. Goerz Optische Anstalt Akt.- Ges., Akciova Spolecnost K. P. Goerz opticky ustav, C. P. Sept. 18, 1925, [Convention date]. Sights and methods of sighting.-The indirect sighting of ordnance and machine guns is effected by providing a horizontal datum line above or below the gun, the datum line being viewed through a sight, and being adjustable relatively to a line visible in the sight to the known target angle, so that the gun can be trained on the target by bringing the lines into coincidence or parallelism. Figs. 5 and 6 show a plate 2 anchored between the wheels of a field carriage and provided with parallel datum lines which can be set to a given initial direction by turning the plate about a pivot 3. The lines are viewed through a telescope 6 mounted on the gun and levelled about a ball-joint 5. A line in the field of view of the sight can be set to the known target angle by a worm gear 9 and a mirror 10 may be added to enable the lines to be viewed through the ordinary sight 11. In a modification, the ordinary sight is turned down to view the lines. In a further modification, a reflecting prism is attached to the ordinary sight in front of the objective. The line visible in the sight, Fig. 14, may be fixed in relation to the gun and the plate 2 may be adjusted to the target angle. In this case, an adjustable mirror 17 enables the centre of the lines on the plate to be viewed. A battery of guns may have a single overhead datum line in the form of a wire, the sight on each gun being adjustable to enable the line to be viewed either by turning the whole sight or by turning a prism in front of the objective. -
