Abstract

23,458. Krupp Akt.-Ges., F. Feb. [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Telescopes. - In sighting-telescopes, by means of which objects at various distances may be sighted with the correct angle of elevation without requiring the telescope to be adjusted relatively to the barrel of the gun means are provided to enable an attachment fitted to such a telescope to be used as an ordinary attachment or for both fighting and practice charges. For this purpose, in addition to the sighting-mark on the telescope indic ating a number of distances, a second fighting-mark is so arranged that, when one sighting-mark is adjusted in the field of view, the other disappears from it. Fig. 1 shows a side elevation and part section of a prism telescope fitted with the attachment, and Fig. 3 shows a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Upon the side of the prism A next the eye-piece, a frame B is mounted in a case D so that it can be made to slide vertically to the optical axis of the eye-piece and objective by means of a rack E engaging with a wheel F provided with a hand-wheel G. In the frame B are two glass plates J, K, which may be brought successively opposite a recess c' in a plate C and viewed through the eye-piece. Upon the faces of these plates next the prism A, at the rear focal plane of the objective, is placed a sighting- mark M or N, Figs. 3 and 5, consisting of a series of horizontal lines crossed bv a line which is inclined in order to allow for the variation of the drift of the projectile with the distance. When firing with a fighting charge, the point of the sighting-mark M corresponding to the distance aimed at is made to coincide with the object, the plate B being held by a locking-tooth h' attached to a spring H and fitting in a spice b<1>. If the gun is used with a practice charge, the frame B is lowered by turning the wheel G until the toath h' fits into the tooth space e<1>, and the sighting-mark N is used in a similar way. When the gun is used for only one charge, another sighting-mark, such as a cross-wire, is used in place of the mark N. The spaces between the horizontal lines of the marks may be transparently coloured to render them conspicuous.
