Abstract

791,566. Aiming devices for ordnance and smallarms. COEYTAUX, G., DERAMOND M., and HUGUES, E. Dec. 29, 1955 [Dec. 29, 1954], No. 37194/55. Classes 92 and 119. [Also in Group XX] A coincidence rangefinder having two spaced objectives of different focal lengths, coincidence of the images of a target being effected by rotation of the instrument about an axis perpendicular to the ranging plane, is mounted substantially vertically on a firing weapon to act as a sight, the focal length of at least one of the objectives varying with the target distance in such a way that rotation of the weapon and sight about a horizontal axis to effect coincidence of the images of the target gives the weapon the appropriate elevation for firing. Fig. 7 shows the rangefinder 7 mounted on the barrel of a rocket - launcher by means of a wedge 12 to set the sight and weapon for a target at a standard distance. The theoretical basis of the invention is described in the Specification Fig. 3 shows in elevation and Fig. 4 in plan the optical system of the rangefinder sight. The beam 1 from the target incident on the window F 1 of the sight is reflected by a prism P 1 to the entrance-pupil diaphragm D 1 of an objective O 1 whence it passes via the objective O 1 , Amici prism P 2 and rhombohedral prism P 3 to form an image adjacent a doublet O 2 having a strongly curved cemented surface and which is designed according to ballistic curve of the weapon to give the desired variation of focal length of the objective system O 1 O 2 with target distance. Numerical data are given for one such system. Light from this image reaches the eyepiece O c through an aperture 6 in reflecting surface 5 between prisms P and P 4 . The other target beam 2, incidence on the window F 21 , passes the second objective O 21 and is reflected by prisms P 21 , P and surface 5 to form an image in th'e eyepiece O c which surrounds the image formed by the other objective so that coincidence of the images may be readily observed. A scale indicating the range may be formed on the reflecting surface 5.
