Abstract
258,483. Barnes, E. Feb. 26, 1926. Helical springs. - A cylindrical portion is connected to another cylindrical portion by an integral junction part having coils of greater size so that some parts of a spring will have greater elasticity coupled in some cases with equal or even greater strength. In the example shown in Fig. 2, the two similar cylindrical portions A, B, A<1>, B<1> are connected by an integral junction piece B, B' having cylindrical and conical parts. In this case, the junction piece possesses greater elasticity but less strength since the spring is wound from wire of uniform gauge. Fig. 5 shows a construction in which cylindrical portions AB, A<1>B<1> are connected by a junction piece BB<1> of varying but larger diameter, the spring being made from wire of varying gauge as shown in Fig. 4. The portion BB<1> is of greater elasticity than the remainder. The variations in gauge of the wire decided upon will determine which of the parts as the strongest.
