Abstract
226,586. Marrec, Ltd., and Marrec, Y. Aug. 29, 1923. Inductances.-A variable inductance comprises a length of wire or strip the end portions of which are wound inductively on two drums, the middle point of the wire being fastened to a third drum on which the remainder of the wire is wound non- inductively. The drums are connected by gearing. The conductor may be of round, square or rectangular section, and mav be wound in helical grooves on the drums, or it may be flat strip wound in a plane spiral. The drums may be of such cross-section as to provide a special relation between the inductance and the amount of turning. The inductive windings may be provided with magnetic cores which may be independent or coupled. According to the Provisional Specification the drums may be connected by friction gearing to allow slip when, as in the case of flat spiral windings, the speed ratio is variable. In a modification gearing is dispensed with, the wire being kept in tension by a spring applied to one of the drums.
