Abstract

[Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A variable resistance or inductance comprises a coiled conductor consisting of a strip or ribbon of metal wound into the form of a flat spiral with insulating material located between the convolutions of the coil, and a brush or like contact adapted to be moved over the edges of at least some of the convolutions. Figs. 1 and 2 show a simple form of variable resistance comprising a resistance coil 1 formed by winding brass strip into a flat spiral with mica between the convolutions, the edges of the turns being ground flat for engagement by a laminated brush 2 operated by a wheel 4 so as to move from the innermost to the outermost turn. Alternatively, there may be a brush engaging each side of the coil 1, or there may be two or more coils, in which case they may be coplanar or coaxial. Coaxial coils may have an iron core so as to form a variable inductance. The ends of the coils may be connected in various series and parallel circuits and may be used for varying the field of a D.C. arc-welding generator. The law of variation of the resistance may be modified by making the different turns of different gauge strip. Alternatively, one face of the made-up coil may be ground, concave or conical as shown in section at 59, 60, Fig. 26. Fig. 30 shows an embodiment having two coils 87, 88, each having a brush 85, 86 engaging the outer faces. The coils are mounted in insulated manner between plates 89, held in position by clamping nuts on screwed rods 91. The brushes are fixed on a spindle 92 carrying an arm 93 which has at its end a gear sector 94 driven by a pinion on a spindle 95 having a hand wheel 96. An index 97 is provided for co-operation with a fixed scale 98. The brushes are connected by flexible conductors to terminals 100, 101, while connecting means 102 are provided for the coils.
