258,047. Ruscoe & Co., Ltd., J., and Kenyon, G. H. July 22, 1925. Portable turning apparatus. - In a method of, and means for, inserting a valve in a pipe line A under pressure, split flanges B with packing space b are permanently secured to the pipe and a cutter head D with radial tools is set up from the pipe and the cut started. A detachable casing with extension C is bolted in position on machined portions b<1> of the flanges B without contact with the pipe and a screw spindle N is actuated to complete the cut. The spindle N, cutter head and the severed pipe are withdrawn into the extension along guides and a stopping-off plate is inserted in an aperture h. The cover plate K is removed and a cradle with valve substituted for the cutter head. The screw N is manipulated to adjust the valve between the flanges B and screws P are tightened to force the flanges B against the valve. The flanges are then bolted and caulked, and the casing is removed.
