Abstract

236,315. Pass, E. April 16, 1924. Portable turning-apparatus; studs, inserting.-Apparatus for applying stop-valves or other fittings to gas, water &c. mains without interruption of service comprises a divided fluid-tight casing to be applied round the main and which contains pipecutting means and the fitting, means operated from outside the casing being provided for actuating the cutter and for positioning and securing the fitting. The pipe-cutter consists of two bevel. wheels b<2>, Fig. 5, carrying cutters b<1> and rotated by pinions b<3> driven at b<5> outside of the casing a<4>. The wheels are in two parts to permit assembly on the pipe and fixed projections b' engage with star-wheels b<6> on the shanks of the cutters to effect radial feed. The fluid-tight casing consists of lower and upper parts a, a<1> , and an extension a<5>, Fig. 2, in which the valve v is suspended by rods c secured to a cross-head d<1> actuated by a screw d. In operation, divided sleeves e<1>, Fig. 4, are placed on the pipe m and jointed by molten lead or other means. Spigots e<2> on the sleeves carry slidable flanges f, between which and flanges e on the sleeves, rubber or other rings are placed. The pipe-cutter is next positioned and the easing assembled with the valve suspended in the extension a<5>. When the pipe has been severed the cutter and severed portion of the pipe are withdrawn into the cornpartment a<3>. Fig. 2, and the valve, the flanges of which have been luted, is lowered into position. The correct position for the valve is determined by an indicator, or by glazed inspection covers a<7>, Fig. 4, or by projections on the flanges f on which the valve may rest. The flanges f are then advanced by screwed spindles h to engage with the valve-flanges and studs i mounted in the flanges e are screwed into tapped holes in the valve-flanges by stud-boxes j. The casing may then be removed, nuts x applied to the studs i, and compression springs may be passed round the packing-rings g and finally surrounded by molten lead. All the spindles &c. are packed where they pass through the fluid-tight casing.
