Abstract

138,552. Bingham, E. July 18, 1919. Internal pipe cutters. -A tool for cutting boiler-stay and other tubes internally comprises a series of sections, each carrying a pair of cutting-tools, and expanded and rotated by a tapered mandrel having flat or fluted sides, the sections being guided in radial slots in the stop ring. Three body-sections 2 are secured at one end by screws 3 to segments 4 of a conical spring 5, each screw also clamping one cutter 1 of each pair to its section. Guides 6 are secured by screws 7 to the other end of the body-sections, the screws also clamping the other cutters 1<A>. The guides engage radial slots 9 in the stop ring 11, marks on the flange 10 of the ring and on the guides showing the depth of cut. The sections are shaped and hardened to receive a tapered hexagonal or other mandrel 13, which is fed longitudinally by a press or drill-head to expand the sections and is rotated by a portable electric or compressed-air motor to effect the cut. One cutter of each pair is situated at or near the centre of the tube plate 1. The other set of cutters may project slightly more than the first set so that they may cut through the tube first. The cut-off pieces at the ends of the tube may be removed by bending.
