Abstract

257,335. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, Sir G. T. May 27, 1925. Projectile fuzes. - Relates to direct-action percussion fuzes in which the detonator is carried in a safe position in a movable holder locked bv the direct-action striker until discharge, when the striker moves forward and releases the detonator holder which then brings the detonator opposite the firing pin of the striker and in line with the flash passage. According to the invention, the detonator holder is moved to the armed position by a spring which may be helped by centrifugal force, instead of by centrifugal force solely as heretofore. In the form shown in Fig. 1, centrifugal arms D move out during flight and release the striker C, which is then moved forward by a spring c<1>, withdrawing the firing pin c from the detonator holder B. This releases the detonator holder, which is then moved aside by a spring B<1> until the detonator b<x> is opposite the firing pin c and in line with the flash passage a The head of the striker may be perforated to reduce air resistance. A port b<2x> may be formed in the detonator holder to prevent air cushioning. The fuze is mounted in a body A with screwed sleeves A<1>, E. In modifications, the striker is moved forward by centrifugal arms arranged like a centrifugal governor, or is released by sliding centrifugal bolts normally locked by a spirally wound tape secured by a detachable cover, and the detonator holder is movable transversely about an eccentric pivot or is rotatably mounted transversely to the fuze.
