Abstract

252,419. Viewers, Ltd., and Johnson, F. G. L. Jan. 22, 1925. Projectile fuzes. - Relates to safety devices of the kind comprising rearwardly extending weighted arms which move out by centrifugal force during the rotation of the projectile. According to the invention, a spindle D is arranged at right angles to the axis of the fuze, and is provided at each end with rearwardly extending weighted arms D<2> so arranged in relation to the axis of the fuze that centrifugal force can swing them out onlv when forward acceleration is over. This device may move (1) a flash obturator, or (2) a shutter between the firing pin and the detonator, or (3) the detonator into line with the firing pin, or any combination of these safety arrangements. As shown, the spindle D contains the detonator D<1>, which, in the safe position, is out of line with and screened off from the firing pin C and also cut off from the flash passage below it (not shown); moreover, the firing pin is held off by arms D<x> on the spindle D. The spindle D is itself locked in the safe position against a stop a<2> by spring-controlled centrifugal hooks. These hooks move out and release the spindle when centrifugal force begins, but the weighted arms D<2> do not swing out until acceleration is over. When the outward swing of the arms D<2> occurs, the arms D<x> release the striker C, and the rotation of the spindle D brings the detonator D' in line with and exposed to the firing pin C on one side and the flash passage on the other side. The firing pin is situated a short distance behind the direct-impact striker B, and a hollow collapsable washer B<1> is provided behind the head b of this striker as described in Specification 258,467. Specification 233,378 also is referred to.
